Angled Drops Prove to Elimiante Excess Vestige and Improve Hot Runner System Performance
Angled Drops are an innovative approach to injection molding that improves the overall hot runner system performance. In spring of 2003, Plastic Engineering & Technical Services introduced the Angled Drop system as a solution to enhance the injection molding process allowing precise points of injection on the part surface.
"Our customers have been extremely pleased with the overall performance and results of the Angled Drop injection molding system and have placed additional orders," said Bruce Casey, general manager, Plastic Engineering & Technical Services. "The conceptual engineering design works well with the systems as well as reduces cycle time and provides energy savings. We identified a need in the industry and engineering an innovative solution."
The Angled Drops are constructed with P20 steel providing multi-zone heating to allow for precise shot control. The precise injection eliminates excess vestige on extreme contoured surfaces. The Angled Drops are designed to eliminate secondary operations such as degating that results in additional cost-efficiencies.
The industry first injection molding method reduces shear and cavity pressure. The patent pending design results in cost-savings due to the ability to use a 1000-ton or 1500-ton press versus a standard 3000-ton press. The new Angled Drops reduce clamp tonnage by half ultimately improving cycle time, eliminating vestige and allowing for a shorter flow.
"The new Angled Drop is clearly a result of the attention to detail and innovative thinking provided by the Plastic Engineering & Technical Services team," said John Naylor, director of engineering, H.S. Die. "The Angled Drop system has made it possible to downside molds and allow us to use low vestige tips where it was not possible before. The engineering team at Plastic Engineering & Technical Services has created a new design option that will help us in streamlining our injection molding production systems and become more cost-efficient."
